In the United States and Europe, Christmas is the biggest holiday of the year.  If you compare it to the importance of Chinese holidays, you’d compare it to Chinese New Year.

We like to decorate our homes for the holidays and of course, without a doubt, you probably think of the Christmas tree.  Many families will go out to purchase a fresh Christmas tree every year.  At my house, we opt for convenience and set up an artificial tree.

On the trees, we place what are called ornaments.   You can buy Christmas ornaments at the store, but care must be taken to place them on the tree because they are fragile.  If you drop one, they will certainly shatter.

However, the best Christmas ornaments are ones that are made by children because they add a personal touch to the tree and bring back fond memories over the years.

I’d like to tell you about some Christmas decorations:

  • the Christmas wreath: these are customarily placed on a door or in a window.   If you place it flat on a table, it is common to place a decorative red candle in the center.
  • Christmas garland: this is a long rope-like piece of pine which can be placed on a handle of some stairs or perhaps along a fence.
  • mistletoe:  this is often placed in a location where someone can stand under it, such as hanging it from the ceiling.  Or as seen in picture, a lover can hold it over his or her head and expect a kiss.
