Happy New Year! 新年快乐!Year of the Dragon

Happy New Year!  新年快乐!万事如意!恭喜发财!红包拿来!

I suppose I’m still facing a bit of holiday fatigue from late last year, after Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years and just three weeks into the new year, another holiday.

But who am I to complain??  Holidays are supposed to be a festive and fun occasion.   You get time off from work to be with friends and family.

Just as millions of people criss-cross the United States to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas, millions of people in China and Taiwan will travel home to celebrate Chinese New Year the Year of the Dragon(龙年). More »

taiwan f-16 sale

The US will likely opt for a downgraded F-16 deal for Taiwan.

WASHINGTON From all indications, the Obama Administration will not be selling advanced F-16 C/D fighters to Taiwan, but will opt to offer a deal worth nearly 4 billion USD.   They will be briefing Congress on this matter on Friday.

Taiwan was lobbying for an 8 billion USD upgrade to replace its aging F-16 A/B fleet, but this would not fly very well with Beijing which regards Taiwan as a renegade province from its civil war.

Under the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, the United States is obligated by law to help Taiwan maintain the weapons it needs to  maintain “sufficient self-defense capability.”    Congress passed this act during the Carter Administration as a condition for dropping diplomatic recognition of Taiwan in favor of China. Yesterday marked the 10th anniversary of 9/11. The Mid-Autumn Festival was also celebrated overseas.

Yesterday marked the 10th anniversary of 9/11. At the same time, the Mid-Autumn Festival 中秋节 was celebrated overseas.

I can’t believe that it has been nearly a year since I blogged about my feelings regarding the 9/11 terrorist attacks and even more surprising is how quickly the last 10 years past.

And yesterday, while Presidents Bush and Obama were commemorating the tenth anniversary of 9/11, many people in the world were celebrating something much happier, the Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节).

I wish we had more of a Mid-Autumn Festival mindset than a 9/11 mindset.  9/11 changed American in many ways. More »

亞洲女警和美國女警

Didn’t Confucius say “a picture is worth a 1000 words“? What do these photos of women police officers from Asia and America say to you?

Frankly, I’m not terribly impressed with the Americans, but I’m glad to say they really aren’t representative of American police officers I’ve seen. More »

Yao Ming speaks of his retirement from the NBA

I am very happy that Yao Ming was able to come to the United States to play basketball for nine years.   Even more so after listening to him in an interview about his retirement with Graham Bensinger.

Yao Ming brings much of the Chinese ideal of hard work and humility to the game.   He’s a role model not only to Chinese kids, but to American kids as well.

Famous players such as Dennis Rodman has a bad-boy image and Kobe Bryant made headlines several years ago because of an affair he had.   Magic Johnson, a star from years ago contracted HIV. More »
