I live in the Silicon Valley.  It is called the “Silicon Valley” because there are many companies involved in high technology, “hi-tech” that manufacture semiconductors.  The main component in semiconductors is silicon.

The Silicon Valley is south of San Francisco, which is an hour drive to the north.

Before it was known as the Silicon Valley, this area had very good agricultural land because the ground is very fertileOrchards were very common.   However, those days have past, with companies replacing the orchards.

The Silicon Valley is a melting pot“, the people who live here come from many different places around the globe.  There are people from China, Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, Viet Nam, and many European nations.

Because there are so many Asian people here, I joke that I’m a minority.  This strong Asian immigrant influence has an obvious impact on the community.   There are numerous Chinese groceries stores, restaurants, and shopping malls.

Children of Chinese immigrants attend Chinese language schools during the weekend.  Some children also go to after-school programs, often at kung fu studios to help them with their homework, learn Chinese, and even kung fu.

Because of the strong Chinese presence in the Silicon Valley, Chinese holidays such as Chinese New Year, and to a lesser extent, the Mid-Autumn Festival are well known.

I will speak more about hi-tech companies in a future blog.
