(Continued from 老马识途 “An old horse knows the way”, part 1)
Then a man name Guan Zhong approached the king with an ingenious plan. “A dog who is away from home somehow manages to find its way back. Furthermore, an old horse possesses the same homing ability that the dog has. It remembers the roads it has traveled. Your Majesty, I suggest that we allow one of our old horses to lead us home.
The king accepted the suggestion with great enthusiasm. “This is an excellent idea! Find an old horse and place it at the front of the army.”
Several old horses were untied and allowed to roam freely with the troops right behind them. Eventually, the horses led the tired army home.
The Chinese idiom 老马识途 “an old horse knows the way” is now used to describe someone who has much experience or based on prior experience has the ability to lead during a crisis.
