Jam Hsiao’s first English inteview.

I was impressed with Jam Hsiao's first English interview. I wish my Chinese was as good as his English!

If you are a Jam Hsiao fan and reading “My China Connection” for the first time, welcome!!   The purpose of this blog is to help Chinese speakers become more idiomatic in their English and to increase their vocabulary.

I cover many English idioms, but I don’t want to limit myself to that.  One can hone their English skills by reading about Western news and culture.  Since you are familiar with Chinese culture, reading about it in English is another good way to learn.

I am curious about a number of things that take place in China and Taiwan and over the past several years I’ve known about Jam Hsiao’s lightning-fast rise in popularity.   It is easy to see why.   He’s not only a talented singer with a tremendous vocal range, but he is comfortable with a number of instruments and musical genres.

My problem is that I cannot fully appreciate his talent because my Chinese is rather elementary.

He has a good ear for picking up English songs.  I understand he likes singing songs by Bon Jovi and the Eagles.

I heard him do an English interview on 点心 Cafe.  Even though he hasn’t been studying English that long, he sounded very natural and lucid speaking to his two American hosts.   During the interview he exuded confidence, charisma, and humor.  He sounded like the type of guy you could sit down with and have a cup of coffee and have a good chat.  Very down to earth and unpretentious.

The interviewers commended Jam for his great attitude because they know people with much more experience in English who shy away from being interviewed.  They observed that he puts more value on growth and learning than “saving face”.

I believe that that drive to learn and grow and his willingness to take risks, will make him a truly great performer.   If you know of anything that he’s done in English, would you please drop me a note!  I hope to write more about him.

Hi Dave!!! Thanks so much in taking an interest in our beloved Jam!! well it is diffiult NOT to like him once you know him, kid or grown ups, guys or ladies, and yes, I am one of his many many Mrs. hsiao hahahah!!!! Honestly, before I knew jam, I seldom listened to Chinese songs, he has changed me in many ways, in a happy and positive way I must say~ I still remember the first time I bumped into him singing on TV~~ wow I was totally captivated, still until now. I must say he is the ONLY CHinese singer who has the attitude and the power to carry ROCK, esp to me,, rock is nowhere to be found now~~ He is, yes as you saidso a very charming, down-to earth guy with CHARIMA, though he is still very young.

he has made us proud in many ways before, including this English interview!!! We said at the time that it was like seeing our kid graduated!! He once said, difficulty is a new change in disguise, with one difficulty, it means one new door is going to be open. This attitude has carried him to what he has been now, and will carry him far.

Sorry for my LONG one, haha!! savour Jam whenever you can, we all say the way to know a country is thru their people (WELL BF GF HAHA!!!), thier food, and sure, their music! Cheers!!!

Hi, how can I address you? Landawei? Was it David? Hm, this is not the first time I’m here for your entry about Jam H. I’m not really surprised to having a 老外 admiring him. I mean, good things are worth sharing around the world, haha.

As for his attempts to learning better English, I’d only know about this.

Could I also share with you this? You could find him adorable, and how pleasant he can get, hehe. Oh, I personally love his way of singing this song too. Enjoy! (:

Oh, and this too! (:

@ZS.
Thank you for your comments. I prefer “Dave” rather than “David”, but if you call me 大卫 it doesn’t bother me.
I hope you will come back to “My China Connection” on a regular basis, not just when write about Jam Hsiao. :-)
下一次再见!

Noted, Dave. I’ll come often to improve my English too, although I’m English educated. :) May I know what motivates you to pick up Chinese?

I enjoy dabbling with languages. Unfortunately I’m fluent only in English. I studied French and German in high school.
I college I made many Vietnamese friends and learned some of that language. In time, I studied a little Chinese.
It is my favorite language so far!

Thank you for writing about Jam, again~
“He sounded like the type of guy you could sit down with and have a cup of coffee and have a good chat. Very down to earth and unpretentious.”
Oh yes, he IS!
One of the reasons why we love him so much~~
Jam’s always trying to learn new things and never afraid of making mistakes during the process~
That’s why he’s so successful now~
Hope you will not only write some more articles about Jam in the future, but also introduce him to your American(?) friends!
Let more people learn about this awesome singer! :)

@Biker.

Thanks for visiting “My China Connection”. I wish my Chinese was better, but I can appreciate that he is a good entertainer and from all accounts a very nice person. Please come back and be a regular “MCC” reader! I have written several posts about him.
