Haha, I don’t agree with your point of view:-(

烫手的山芋 literally means you REALLY WANT TO EAT sweet potato,but it is too hot to hold,it figuratively means you REALLY WANT TO GET something,but you are also afraid of being hurt when having it.

It would appear that nobody really want to get “HOT POTATO”,they are different by nature:-)

I have been to a few white elephant parties and most of the time the gifts that were being stolen the most were anything out of the ordinary. Usually something you don’t see every day that is still somewhat useful. With a gift limit of only $10, I was amaze at all the weird and wacky things I could get while keeping my bank account happy. Ah..Sorry, there was a typo,it should be “wittingly or unwittingly”,it seems I am still thinking in Chinese,because we have a common expression”有意无意”(which exactly means “wittingly or unwittingly”), we usually use 有意 and 无意 together.however it seems you prefer to use them separately, willfully hurt her or hurt her unwittingly…:-)
In addition,we also have 愿不愿意（willingly or unwillingly），同意不同意…we prefer to use these two opposite words together.:-)

Oh, unwittingly is simply a way to say that someone was not aware of something. “The child unwittingly …” simply means that
the child did not realize that they gave away other information. It isn’t a matter of formal vs. informal, it is simply a way to
say the child was not aware of the information it gave away.

In Chinese you have the phrase 此地无银三百两. In the original story, the person who wrote that unwittingly “showed his hand”, right?

It would appear we have exactly the same understanding in regard to this expression,which also comes from Poker game.Great nations think alike!
BTW,you used “unwittingly” in this post,I wonder what you would say in your daily life if you want to express “sometimes you might hurt your wife’s feeling wittingly or unwittingly”,it seems “wittingly and unwittingly” is bit formal.what words or expressions do you use here in daily conversation:-)

it seemed less colder than previous years,it is just -5 degree today.We are seriously lacking in snow this year here,if I remember correctly,We have had only one snowfall this winter,It is so glaringly obvious that global warming is affecting our lives now
