Mark Twain on work and vacation, and San Francisco

American author and humorist Mark Twain

I was chatting on QQ recently with someone who expressed their disappointment with the Chinese New Year celebration.   She characterized it as “boring”.   She didn’t go into the details, but in the QQ exchange, I shared with her a famous proverb by the American author, Mark Twain.

Mark Twain is famous for books such as “Tom Sawyer” and “Huckleberry Finn”.   Twain was a humorist and social commentator.   His book “Huckleberry Finn” was a stinging criticism on slavery in America, told from the point of view of a the young boy, ‘Huck’ Finn.

Well, getting back to the quote related to my friend’s sentiments on Chinese New Year.   Twain said:

“The worst day of fishing is better than the best day of work.”

Here, Twain is saying that even if time off  from work doesn’t go as well as you would like, it is still better than working.

Another one of his famous quotes was:

The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.”

It is amazing how cold the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean make San Francisco feel, a light coat even in the summer is advisable.

I saw this sign  hanging in the window of Twain’s home town in Hamilton, Missouri.  It’s my favorite “Twainism”:

“When I was 18 years old  I thought my father was the stupidest man in the world.   By the time I turned 21, I was surprised how much the old guy wised. up”

I hope you enjoy Twain quotes and humor as much as I do.

“The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.”

Heard this one tones of times. Hope I can experience it myself someday.

@Lei,
San Francisco is a very interesting place. A great place to visit while the rest of the nation is sweltering in the heat of summer.
Same for the entire California coast. A trip to Santa Cruz, Monterey, 17 Mile Drive and Carmel is highly recommended too.
