“Jack of all trades, master of none” or simply “jack of all trades” is a piece of slang that you should master. This phrase means that someone is competent in a wide variety of skills, but is not proficient in any of them to be considered an expert.
Such a person is a generalist and while the knowledge or ability is on many fronts is superficial, he is also is very handy and versatile.
The term came for England in the early 1600′s. During this time period, “Jack” was a slang term for “man”. In America, we typically say the phrase in its shortened form, “jack of all trades“.
Examples: “Tony wears many hats in his job. He’s a jack of all trades.”
“Andy is very handy in when it comes to home repair. He can do framing, dry wall, and roofing. He’s a real jack of all trades“.
