Silicon Valley: Google part 1

by landawei on October 11, 2010

Google receives more web traffic than any other company in the world.

I wrote a blog about Intel, which has some significant operations in China.   Google is in a totally different industry than Intel, but it too has a presence in China.

Google is best know for its search engine and advertising.   Their website receives the most traffic in the world.  In China, Baidu leads Google in usage but it still has a sizable internet presence.

Google has been doing some very interesting research and development outside their normal search engine market.  In this blog and the next, I will speak of two related to travel.

Google has mapping software, Google Maps, which is very innovative. If you want to go from a house in San Jose to  the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, their mapping software can not only print out a normal road map, but show you the directions that you need to take at the street level.

The technology allows you to see in any direction with complete photographs of the area. Being able to see landmarks takes this sort of map to the next level and helps the user.  Being able to see a photograph of your destination is certain a tremendous boon.
